Surrending a Rabbit

We understand that sometimes circumstances change. If you need support, we are here, without judgement.

We know this isn’t an easy decision. Our role is to support both you and your rabbit, ensuring they move forward into a safe and well-matched future.

How surrender works

  • We are a small, home-based sanctuary with limited space

  • A waiting list is often in place

  • Urgent welfare cases are prioritised

  • We will contact you as soon as a space becomes available

A note on surrender donations

We ask for a surrender donation to help cover the initial cost of care when a rabbit comes into SBS.

Many rabbits arrive without the basics, often unneutered, unvaccinated, and without appropriate diet or housing.

Before they are ready for rehoming, they require time, stability, and often significant veterinary input.

Typical costs include:

  • Neutering: £120 (castration) / £135 (spay)

  • Vaccination & health check: £60-£100

  • Worming and mite treatment £50

  • Ongoing food (hay, pellets, fresh greens)

  • Bedding, housing, and enrichment

  • Time and rehabilitation

Why we ask for a donation

As a small, donation-funded sanctuary, we simply cannot absorb these costs alone.

A surrender donation helps us:

– Begin immediate care for your rabbit

– Continue supporting the rabbits already with us

– Keep space available for those who urgently need it

It also reflects the shared responsibility we all have in ensuring rabbits receive the standard of care they deserve.

In most cases, the cost of preparing a rabbit for adoption exceeds £250.

What happens when your rabbit comes to us

  1. Time to settle and decompress

  2. Health and behaviour assessment

  3. Proper diet, housing, and enrichment

  4. Neutering and vaccination (where possible)

  5. Careful matching to the right home

A flexible approach

We understand that everyone’s circumstances are different. If you are able to contribute, we ask that you do so thoughtfully, with your rabbit’s future care in mind. If you are not in a position to make a donation, please still reach out — our priority will always be the welfare of the rabbit.

Before surrender, please be ready to share:

  • Age and history

  • Diet and routine

  • Health concerns

  • Behaviour and temperament
